The year 2002 saw many new impulses in the interaction of law and religion; some as a reaction to the events of September 11, 2001, others as evolutions or revolutions within countries and legal systems. This conference addressed a wide variety of new impulses, from theories and practices to new impulses in Islam and inter-faith relations. Keynote addresses were delivered by Professor Jacques Robert, senior member of the Constitutional Council of France and Vice President of European Commission for Democracy Through Law (the Venice Commission) of the Council of Europe and Dean Michael K. Young, Vice Chair, United States Commission on International Religious Freedom and Dean, The George Washington University Law School. 70 participants represented over 39 nations. After the conference, some participants further developed their papers, which were then published in the annual law and religion symposium issue of the BYU Law Review.
