Syamsul Arifin

Syamsul Arifin is a professor in the field of sociology of religion at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM). Before being appointed as a vice rector I for academic affairs in 2023—a position he will hold for the next eight years—and becoming a rector “in term” at UMM (30 November 2023—31 January 2024), he was assigned to several positions, including deputy director for academic affairs at the postgraduate program of UMM and director of the Center for the Study of Religion and Multiculturalism. As director of the study center, he managed several programs, including one in association with the International Center for Law and Religion Studies at BYU. He also managed the master-level course on Sharia and human rights, a program intended to disseminate a more constructive understanding of human rights and the intersectional relationship between Islam and human rights. This program has produced many scientific outputs, including the book Shari’a and Human Rights: A Coursebook (2022). Professor Arifin’s studies related to human rights have been published in various international journals. He has been invited by several universities overseas to conduct collaborative research and seminars.
