December 2008 – Strasbourg
On 4 December 2008, the European Court of Human Rights decided the Case of Dogru and Others v. France. Belgin Dogru and Esma-Nur Kervanci are French nationals who were expelled from school for wearing a headscarf during physical education and sports classes. They brought suit under Article 9 (protecting freedom of thought, conscience and religion) and under Article 2 of Protocol Number 1 (protecting right to education). The Court held that there was no violation of Article 9 and that there was no reason to examine the Protocol 1, Article 2. To visit our Dogru case portal, please click here.
