Joanna Smith

Joanna Smith is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In her research, she traces shifting sensibilities around nature, violence, and animality in American religious history. She is currently finishing a dissertation that examines the sacrificial dimensions of contemporary hog slaughter in North Carolina. She also serves as the Associate Director for State Outreach at Carolina Public Humanities, where she helps to facilitate publicly-engaged scholarship around the state.
